                    "Metal Slug 4

Metal Slug 4 is the latest in the slug line, many have hopes it will be better and much larger than MS3 - Here we will take a look inside and find out.

A look inside the MS4 Home cart:

Metal Slug 4 Home Cart - Graphics Board

The graphics board used for MS4 is the same one they used for most of the recent releases. This board uses the 240 Pin CMC chip and 64Megabit Mask ROM chips.

One noticeable difference between MS4 and KOF99, 2000, 2001 and MS3 are the 2 missing mask roms. Chips C7 and C8 are not used this time around which cuts the meg count down by 128Megs. Metal Slug 4 at a glance won't even hit 600Megs due to the two missing chips. Normally all mask rom chips used are Toshiba or unbranded, this time around the chips are stamped "Mega Enterprise". These mask roms also have no label to indicate the meg size of each. We're able to tell the size of each chip by the jumper settings on the board.

                    Metal Slug 4's M1 mask rom chip is 4Megabit - while C1 to C6 are 64Megabit. This makes (6 x 64) + 4 which equals 388Megabit.

Metal Slug 4 Home Cart - Program Board

When it comes to selecting a program board to use on the NeoGeo (MVS or Home) the maker has a choice.

                    1) They can use the Neo-AEG ProGBK1Y - which is the choice for any non protected title (Shock Troopers/Strikers 1945 Plus).

                    2) They can use the Neo-AEG ProGLBA - Which includes the NEO SMA chip. This board is used for larger games which use protection (KOF99/MS3).

As you can see from the image above - Playmore has used a new design, one which does not follow any board before it. At a glance it looks as if the new custom chip named NEO-PCM2 is used to protect the program code. A closer look at how the chip is used shows that the main purpose of the chip is to address all of the code on the Vx mask roms and does not offer any protection at all.

This is a major step in the right direction for the NeoGeo. For a long time the Vx mask roms (Music/Sound) wasn't being used to its max. If you look at any board before this one half of the address outs are not used at all. This would stop the system from being able to use the full capacity of the mask rom used. The only course of action would be to add a chip which was designed for the job - The NEO-PCM2.

What this step means for newer games is that the maker can use smaller meg mask roms and still produce a title which sounds like a high meg count game. A good example of this would be MS3 which uses 4 x 32Megabit chips, using this new setup the makers could have used 2 chips instead cutting the cost to make this portion of the game in half. Playmore has also opened the door on how the chips are used - this allows for the board to act anyway they wish. This allows for true use of 64Megabit Vx mask roms which will double the music found in MS3, KOF99/2000. The exact meg count for the program board at this time can't be found. The mask rom chips used are similar to that found on the graphics board and have no meg capacity label. Normally we would check the jumpers to see how the main chip set is handling the chips and be able to tell - however in this case we have a new chip which is unknown. On top of this the program mask roms are not setup the same as that of older boards. Newer methods can greatly effect the size of the chip used.

An over view of how the NEO-PCM2 is being used plus the settings on the board point to the Vx mask roms as being 32Megabit each, while the program Px mask roms as being 16Megabit and 32Megabit. This would make the meg count of this board (32 x 2) + (32 + 16) which equals 112Megabit. Since we do not know exactly how the NEO-PCM2 is setup the Vx mask roms could be 64Megabit each which would make the over all meg count to be 64Megabit higher than it is now.

Metal Slug 4's Meg Count & NGH Number:

Metal Slug 4 uses the following memory:

                    Graphics Board: 388Megabit
                    Program Board: 112~172Megabit

                    Total count: 500 or 564.
Metal Slug 4's NGH number is 263.

                    Is Metal Slug 4 Protected?

The answer is no. Many of the newer games use 2 boards both with custom chips. Since "SNK" as it was known stopped producing the games all titles are not shipping using the NEO-SMA program chip. This leaves all future titles open to be copied or dumped for emulator use. The new NEO-PCM2 isn't really new, it was made in 1999 along with the NEO CMC and SMA. At the time all 3 of these chips in a single game would have made a perfect set, however the introduction of the PCM2 now does not help the game from being copied."

                    God damn shit!
